Is Your Firm WISP-Ready?
PTIN Registration (10/03 - 12/31) has a new step - WISP verification.

Don’t waitget your Written Information Security Program (WISP) in place now.

  • Under the Gramm–Leach–Bliley Act (GLBA) Safeguards Rule, anyone handling taxpayer data (accountants & tax preparers) must have a WISP.

  • WISP applies to all firm sizes.

  • PTIN Registration: 10/03 - 12/31.

  • PTIN Renewal now has a WISP Attestation Checkbox.

    • Attestation/checkbox: Preparers must attest their firm has a WISP in place.

    • Documentation on request: The IRS (or FTC) will ask for your WISP during audits or investigations.

    • Denial or suspension risk: If a preparer cannot attest, or is later found noncompliant, their PTIN could be denied, suspended, or revoked.

    • Fines: Up to $100K/Infraction.
